Socialist Modernism in Romania:
Banat & Transylvania
BACU Association and U Tours are jointly running a six-day research study tour through western Romania, a single loop out from the capital and back. The route takes in Bucharest, the Jiu Valley mining settlements, Orșova, Băile Herculane, Timișoara, Arad, Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Brașov and Predeal.
This is a shorter, more concentrated itinerary than our longer country-wide tours — around 1,500 km in total, which leaves real time at each site rather than in the vehicle. Notable buildings include the State Circus in Bucharest, the resort hotel at Băile Herculane, the mosaic murals of Timișoara's West University, the Cultural Palace in Oradea, and the Telephone Palace in Cluj-Napoca, listed as a historic monument in 2025 following a dossier prepared by our association.
BACU's heritage listing specialists provide architectural interpretation, on-site documentation and heritage assessment guidance throughout, while U Tours handles the logistics.
