SocHeritage is B.A.C.U.‘s international platform, launched in 2014 and hosted since 2015 for the ICOMOS ISC20C SocHeritage working group. It advocates for socialist architecture and art works to be recognized and protected as cultural landmarks and historic monuments. We focus on buildings in the former socialist bloc, built between 1933 and 1991 in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), as well as in Central Asia and other regions. The platform collects and provides information on the location and site, current state of conservation, authors, and planning and building history of the socialist legacy.
On the website you will find descriptions, ongoing projects, and useful information on initiatives for conserving valuable landmarks across the former socialist bloc. Sections include case studies sorted by country, articles, documents and publications. This is your virtual library of scientific papers, articles by renowned authors and historical studies that help you understand the architecture of the socialist period.
SocHeritage invites architects, urban planners, historians, art historians, conservationists, artists, activists and anyone interested in this heritage to contribute and broaden the platform. Send us information on neighbourhoods, buildings, monuments, parks, cultural landscapes or any relevant architectural elements, and please specify their location and address. All contributions are published on the website under the name of the author.
